Jeff Benjamin: Great to see you, NCT. ... But first, can you help me understand how this massive project comes together?

Doyoung: Long time no see and thanks for having us. So when the 23 members come together that’s when the different NCT U units come out. They’re usually selected by our producing team and we try to figure out what songs showcase the best synergy or which members should be or would do best by being on this genre or this track. We try to mix it up in that sense.

- 반가워요 NCT. (중략) 먼저, 이 거대한 프로젝트가 어떻게 나오는지 이해하는 것을 도와주실 수 있을까요?

도영 : 오랜만이에요. 초대해주셔서 감사합니다. 23명의 멤버가 모였을 때가 각기 다른 NCT U 유닛의 조합이 나올 때에요. 주로 저희 프로듀싱 팀에 의해 선택되는데 저희는 어떤 노래가 최고의 시너지를 보여줄지 어떤 멤버가 해야 할지 이 장르나 트랙에서는 어떤 멤버가 가장 좋을지 알아내려고 노력합니다. 그런 면에서 섞으려고 노력해요.

Jeff Benjamin: Doyoung, I wanted to ask you in particular because you were a part of “Make a Wish” but also second single “From Home.” I’m curious what the differences in your experiences with these two NCT U units?

Doyoung: Both of these songs felt experimental. To me, and for NCT itself, these two songs are very very different styles. For instance, in the “Make a Wish” unit, this is more performance-based and all of these members here are so great at performing on stage—there’s not much that I do. [Laughs] Just kidding, I just try my hardest and do my best. When it comes to “From Home,” that song is a more vocal-focused ballad which is not something NCT has done frequently so I really wanted to make sure that song showcases that aspect of NCT. But I worked really hard to prepare for these challenges.

Taeyong: [While all members clap for Doyoung] Doyoung, yeah! Double music videos!

- 도영씨, “Make A Wish”에도 참여하고 “From Home”에도 참여하셨기 때문에 특별히 물어보고 싶은 것이 있어요. 이 두 NCT U 유닛의 경험에서 어떤 차이점이 있는지 궁금합니다.

도영 : 두 곡 모두 실험적으로 느껴졌어요. 저에게도, NCT 자체에도 이 두 곡은 매우 매우 다른 스타일을 가지고 있습니다. 예를 들어, “Make A Wish” 유닛에서는 더 퍼포먼스에 기반을 두고 있고 여기 모든 멤버들이 무대에서 굉장히 잘해요. 제가 하는 것은 많지 않습니다. [웃음] 농담이고 저는 그저 최대한 노력하고 최선을 다합니다. “From Home”은 NCT가 자주 하지 않았던 좀 더 보컬에 중점을 둔 발라드곡이기 때문에 저는 NCT의 그런 면모를 보여줄 수 있는 곡을 꼭 하고 싶었습니다. 하지만 저는 이러한 도전을 준비하기 위해 정말 열심히 노력했어요.

Jeff Benjamin: The individual NCT groups also got their own song on Resonance as well. Can you tell me about the process for each of these songs?

Doyoung: For [NCT 127’s] “Music, Dance” in particular, the song itself is very energetic. I just remember having a lot of fun recording it, but we also trying to deliver the same energy when I recorded it. I remember kind of sweating it out actually in the studio.

- 각각 NCT의 그룹도 Resonance에서 각자의 곡이 있죠. 그 노래들 각각에 대한 과정에 대해 말해줄 수 있나요?

도영 : NCT 127의 “Music, Dance"는 노래 자체가 매우 에너제틱해요. 그냥 재미있게 녹음을 했던 기억이 나는데, 녹음을 할 때도 똑같은 에너지를 전달하려고 노력했어요. 스튜디오에서 실제로 땀을 흘렸던 기억이 나요.

Jeff Benjamin: ... Can you each share your favorite desserts?

Doyoung: Chocolate, but chocolate that’s not too sweet.

- (전략) 각자 좋아하는 디저트를 공유해준다면?

도영 : 초콜릿이요. 하지만 너무 달지 않은 초콜릿이에요.

When asked about what has changed since NCT 2018’s release, member Doyoung ruminates on the ways each individual member has personally grown since then. “Compared to the 2018 release, the members have matured a lot. All of our groups, NCT 127, WayV, NCT Dream, they’ve all promoted separately and had their individual releases, so we have had the chance to mature through those experiences, and I think there’s a greater synergy that comes with that when we are all together again,” he shares.

NCT 2018 이후 무엇이 달라졌는지를 묻는 말에 멤버 도영은 그 이후 멤버 개개인이 개인적으로 성장해 온 방식에 대해 되새겨봅니다. "2018년 발매와 비교해 멤버들이 많이 성숙해졌어요. NCT 127, WayV, NCT Dream 등 모든 저희 그룹이 따로따로 프로모션을 하고 각각 (앨범) 발매를 했기 때문에 그런 경험을 통해 성숙할 수 있는 기회가 있었고, 저희가 이렇게 다시 모였을 때 더 큰 시너지를 낼 수 있다고 생각합니다."라고 그는 말합니다.

For some new members, being a part of the group is a dream come true. “I have always loved NCT. It’s a great honor for me to be a part of this group, and I just love being here,” Shotaro says as the older members high five him and pat him on the back. Xiaojun shares similar sentiments – “I feel honored and excited all the time. At first, I was a bit worried about being a fish out of water, but the members give me a lot of strength, warmth, and encouragement, so I really feel so comfortable with them.” As he finishes his sentence, cheers erupt from the members around him.

23 Voices And Limitless Possibilities: How NCT Became One

 

Originally performed by Taeyong and Doyoung as members of SM Entertainment’s pre-debut group SM Rookies, the song received a revamp on Resonance with the inclusion of Kun and Sungchan — past, present, and future NCT members all working side by side. “It’s been six years since we actually performed that [song] together; we have lots of memories about that song,” 24-year-old singer Doyoung reveals. “I actually heard that a lot of fans were waiting for us to come together again on it, and it was cool to have other members join. I think for this album in particular it was kind of like a gift for our fans, but also it was kind of a gift for ourselves too — for me and Taeyong.”

While Resonance may have already set the tone for the future of NCT, the members are open to their next direction. “Right now, we don’t have a specific thing that we can say that, OK, this is the direction that we’re going to go, but NCT itself, our goal has always been to release the best content of that time,” answers Doyoung. “And whether that’s 2021 or 2022, we’re committed to releasing content and music and albums that are best fitting those times.”

“현재로서는 우리가 OK, 이것이 우리가 나아가야 할 방향입니다, 라고 말할 수 있는 구체적인 것은 없습니다. 하지만 NCT 자체는, 저희의 목표는 항상 그 당시 최고의 콘텐츠를 선보이는 것입니다.” 도영은 대답합니다. “그리고 그것이 2021년이든 2022년이든, 우리는 그 시기에 가장 잘 맞는 콘텐츠와 음악, 앨범을 발매하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있습니다."
